Gossip Girl was once dubbed “every parent’s worst nightmare” by critics, but it didn’t stop producers running through with the series which ultimately saw it land a whopping six-season run.
The series covered the entire life of a Manhattan teenager who has a lot of money. It also included drugs, drinking, and partying.
Immediately the show was crowned one of the most popular series on TV, with January 26 being named “Gossip Girl Day” in New York in 2012 as the show aired its 100th episode.
Although the show was launched 14 years ago, it has been re-launched on Netflix and BBC. But what about the cast?
Daily Star explored the lives of the most beloved characters in the series and found out their next steps.
Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf
Leighton Meester embodied Blair Waldorf in a way that created a character that the audience loved to hate. Blair Waldorf’s inherent sparkle and cattiness made her a fearsome character. The audience loved her success, while rooting for her.
But what happened to Queen B? After her career at GG, Leighton was married to actor Adam Brody. She then moved into the music business.
Leighton, now a mother to two children, has been focused on her family. However, it’s not always been easy for her.
In 2011, just before the end of GG, Leighton and her mother Constance filed lawsuits against one another over her financial support to her younger brother.
Because her brother had multiple health issues, she chose to cover his medical bills and pay for his school fees. However, she denies that she would make a monthly contribution. Meester prevailed in the lawsuit.
Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass
Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass paired with Leighton as Blair supported the show in making it the success it was. Initial plans for Chuck’s character were to follow a dark path. This is why he does the horrible things in the pilot.
After Leighton and Ed became friends, Chuck and Blair were born.
Ed’s life, outside of Gossip girl, has been very up-and-down. There have been relationships, costar dating, and, in 2017, sexual assault allegations.
Ed actively denied all claims, previously stating: “I have never forced myself in any manner, on any woman. I certainly have never committed rape.”
There was later deemed to be insufficient evidence behind the accusations and Ed was never charged.
Ed has been acting back in the UK since then, appearing on BBC’s White Girls from 2017 through 2019.
He dated his co-star Jessica Szohr, Vanessa Abrams, while he was still appearing on Gossip Girl. He is now single following his split with Tamara Francesconi.
Blake Lively as Serena Van Der Woodsen
Blake Lively has had an incredibly successful career in the years that followed her debut as the ultimate ‘it’ girl from Manhattan, but it’s not just her career that has proven to be a success.
Blake is a well-known Hollywood star and is still one of the most fashionable celebs, especially when it comes the Met Gala. She is also half of the ultimate Hollywood couple with Ryan Reynolds.
The pair have three daughters together, who they have mostly kept hidden from the public eye, and still focus heavily on their careers as they celebrate their success.
Prior to Blake’s marriage and dating Ryan, she was with Penn Badgley, her childhood friend and co-star. They were together until 2010 and then split up.
Penn Badgley as Dan Humphrey
Penn appeared in multiple smaller roles prior to his debut as Dan Humphrey, including John Tucker Must Die as the ‘Other Tucker’.
Soon after his film debut, he was cast as Dan, the wannabe-writer, who was aware of the privileges his fellow classmates, including Serena, enjoyed.
*SPOILER* While it was later revealed that Dan himself was the illusive voice behind Gossip Girl, he still managed to write himself into the world of the Upper East Side, but what did he do next?
Aside from getting married to Domino Kirke in 2017 and later welcoming a child together, Penn Badgley’s career took a… dark turn.
Penn, who is not too far from Dan’s character, took over the role of Joe on Netflix’s hit series You. He was still sneaky and secretly spied on other people, much like Dan in Gossip Girl. But Joe is a killer.
You is set to receive its third series of Netflix’s hit series You after Joe has found his match. This will be Penn’s second appearance as a main character on one the biggest TV shows.
Taylor Momsen as Jenny Humphrey
Viewers quite literally saw Taylor Momsen grow up on screen as her character Jenny Humphrey started to change. Taylor was too focused on Jenny’s rock career when Jenny became more rock princess.
Taylor was instantly recognized by fans, but not everyone knew where she came from. Then it was revealed that Taylor played Cindy Lou Who in The Grinch. This is a far cry to her drama-loving, fashion-first character Jenny Humphrey.
Taylor quit Gossip Girl in 2009 after several problems on set. Taylor began to concentrate on her music and returned for the finale. However, she also toured with The Pretty Reckless during the years that followed.
Taylor founded her group in 2009 and it has been strong ever since.
Chace Crawford as Nate Archibald
Chace Crawford was another heartthrob in Gossip Girl, presenting himself as the “good guy” compared to Chuck’s “bad boy” demeaner.
He was a key character throughout the series, but Gossip Girl was his first lead role.
He continued acting after the series ended. He was most recently seen in Inheritance with Lily Collins and on The Boys in 2019.
Kelly Rutherford as Lily Van Der Woodsen
After Kelly Rutherford appeared on Gossip Girl, she faced a harrowing custody battle.
As a result of a custody dispute, her children were sent to live with her father in France and Monaco. Her colleagues gave her their full support.
Kelly legally lost custody of her children in 2015, though she admitted in 2019 that she does still see her children “often”.
At the time she told PEOPLE: “They’re just becoming their own people, like, you know, all of us. It’s beautiful to see and I love that they share it with me. They’re really open with me. We’re just really bonding, which is nice.”
Elsewhere, Kelly has continued in her acting career, landing roles in the likes of Dynasty and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists.
Zuzanna Szadkowski as Dorota
Dorota may have appeared like a background character, but to many loyal fans she was an incredibly important part of the Upper East Side – with some fans even convincing themselves that she was Gossip Girl.
Although she was the Waldorf housekeeper, she was also Blair Waldorf’s right-hand lady. She even had her own spinoff Chasing Dorothea after the series ended.
In addition to her roles on the show, she also appeared on Search Party, Girls, The Good Wife and other theatre productions.
