Anthony Joshua told to avoid sex ban before Oleksandr Usyk fight by David Haye

Anthony Joshua should avoid a sex ban before his fight with Oleksandr Usyk, British boxing legend David Haye believes.

Haye, 40, famously imposed a six-week ban on bedroom antics before his fights, which included brilliant wins over Enzo Maccarinelli and Nikolai Valuev.

He said it gave him a psychological edge over his opponents because he didn’t believe they had made the same sacrifice.

But Haye says Joshua, 31, should avoid doing the same if he isn’t used to it before his crunch Usyk bout.

Haye told Daily Star Sport: “I had a six-week no ejaculation rule. It was something I’ve always stuck with.

“In the ring it’s all mind games, it’s all looking at the psychological advantage.

“So when you’re standing across the ring you know you’ve sacrificed something, you’ve given yourself the best opportunity.

“Even if it doesn’t scientifically make a difference, mentally it does, psychologically it gives a fighter or any sportsman an edge.

“I’ve made the ultimate sacrifice, I’ve trained super-hard, I’ve eaten clean, and I haven’t been ejaculating before this, I’ve turned up with a full load, and I’m going to win this fight.

“A few fighters incorporate that. AJ does what AJ does. AJ has a method to what he does and it’s working, so I definitely don’t feel before the biggest fight of your life you can make massive changes, just small adjustments if need be if his team feel they need to.

“Don’t start doing anything that you haven’t done before. He’s on a winning trajectory, he’s only had one blemish, which he rectified so whatever he’s doing, he’s winning.”

It seems Joshua is already in tune with Haye’s advice, having previously said he only bans sex on the day of the fight.

Boxers banning sex before fights has long been the topic of debate. Fictional fight hero Rocky was famously told “women weaken legs” in the first 1976 film.

Fellow British fight legend Carl Froch imposed a sex ban before fights, as did Floyd Mayweather.

Ricky Hatton previously told us that while it wasn’t something he imposed, his mind was simply too focussed on the fight to be distracted by it.

Joshua will face Usyk, 34, from around 10pm on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It is widely considered Joshua’s biggest test since his epic win against Wladimir Klitschko in 2017 at Wembley Stadium.

For many, it is a breath of fresh air following boxing exhibitions involving YouTube star Logan Paul and 58-year-old great Evander Holyfield, who were accused of undermining the sport.

But Haye disagrees the Paul brothers are bad for boxing because he believes it boosts viewing figures.

Haye added: “I disagree with a lot of people I think it’s great, when KSI fought Logan Paul I realised how many non-boxing fans paid for a boxing event and as a result of that lots of people watched the undercard. Who was on the undercard?

“Billy Joe Saunders. Saunders fought the number one fighter in the world, Canelo Alvarez, and how many people tuned into this event as a result of seeing him on the undercard of KSI? So it grows boxing.

“And anyone who doesn’t like it, you can realise it brings fans to boxing, it’s not taking anything away from boxing it’s actually adding to it, that’s how I see it. Bringing in these guys who have got mega fan bases into the sport of boxing.
