Washing your wheelie bins helps to stop spiders entering your home, experts say

There are few people in the world who like sharing their home with creepy crawlies and September’s spider mating season means they’re infiltrating our homes!

While you might have been putting peppermint oil on the door and conkers in your windowsill, pest experts offer some additional advice.

Spiders can gather in your home due to your outdoor bins.

If you don’t frequently wash your outdoor bins then you could be giving the eight-legged critters a secret area to hang around in.

And, when they want to head inside it’s just a quick walk from the bin to your doors, windows or unknown nooks and crannies.

Pest professionals recommend that you keep your bins clean in order to reduce spider populations.

Thomas Marbut, corporate trainer at Mosquito Squad told BestLife, that spiders enjoy hanging out in your bins not because of the rubbish but because of all the insects that gather there.

He explained: “Spiders will often gather around your trash cans, both inside and outside.

“But they aren’t necessarily attracted to your trash, they’re attracted to the pests that hover around the trash.”

And, Wyatt West, a board-certified entomologist and training education manager with Western Exterminator, said that spiders will feel more comfy around your bins the more mess there is.

He said: “If there is a lot of clutter in the trash area, it provides spiders with ample spaces to hide.

“If you notice a large population of flies growing around your trash, you should clean the bin and the area thoroughly so you can reduce the number of spiders that may follow.

“If your fly or spider population is getting out of control despite these cleaning efforts, consider calling professional pest control experts to discuss your options for treatment.”

You can reduce the amount of insects in your home by regularly cleaning out your bins.
