A university has faced a swathe of criticism after video of students performing a particularly racy dance went viral on social media.
The footage was taken with a mobile phone and posted to Douyin (a Chinese video-sharing app). It shows young men and women dancing in pairs before the freshers in a military exercise.
The male dancers are seen moving their female partner around, swinging them and lifting their legs high in the air.
Students are shocked and say “Wow” when the male dancers pull the women’s hips close to their groin area.
The men then throw their partners into the air and pose in a vulgar way.
The incident, which took place at Sichuan Agricultural University in southwestern China on Saturday, September 18, sparked outrage online as viewers said it’s inappropriate to students.
One questioned: “Can someone explain the educational purpose of this performance to me? How is this acceptable?”
Another said: “This is just too embarrassing to watch. I wouldn’t want my children to study there.”
A third blasted: “Let’s be honest, it’s a sex pose, it’s not a dance move.”
A spokesperson for the university said in a statement that the performance was organised by the school’s dance society and stated the students were practising for an upcoming dance competition.
It read: “We understand that the performance had attracted negative comments and impact on the internet.
“The school has promptly arranged for an investigation to verify the situation and has asked the authorities to provide suitable guidelines to the students.
“We treat the matter seriously and consider all opinions and suggestions from the students and parents.
“We will be learning from our mistakes to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.”
In May, a newly-wed couple came under fire when they hired a dancer to perform pole dance during their wedding reception.
Guests were shocked as they watched the performer splitting legs on stage in the middle of the dinner banquet.
