UK weather: Sunny spells expected for many today before horribly wet end to the week

Today looks set to be bright and clear for most after yesterday’s poor weather, and despite a chance of scattered showers by the afternoon this could well be our driest day of the week.

Temperatures will be around 6C for early risers in Scotland this morning. The rest of the UK is expected to be warmer.

Northern Ireland and the central and south of England will remain around 8C. Areas on the east coast and west coast could see 10C.

“Yes some showers continue along western fringes, but inland there is some brighter weather that extends down to eastern England,” Clare Nasir is a Met Office meteorologist.

Today should only bring some occasional patches of rain

“Now further west, we’ll see those showers file in, particularly in the Cheshire Gap and western parts of Wales, with the west country seeing those showers as well.

“But further east, some clearer skies and sunshine to start the day, just patchy cloud.”

That cloud is expected to build inland as the day progresses, leading to the potential for scattered showers in the afternoon. As the showers move across the country, western areas should get a reprieve with some sunshine.

Temperatures, however, will continue to struggle in the afternoon. The south of England and London should settle at around 16C, with it cooling down further north. Scotland and Northern Ireland should hover around 13C to 14C.

The rest of the week looks set to be miserable

Breezes will persist, particularly in the west.

Nasir continued: “Thursday, an area of cloud and rain sweeps across the country, gales for the northwest of Scotland, and then more rain arrives on Thursday night and into Friday as the rain clears down towards the south east.

“So another wet and windy spell as we head through to Friday, and that pretty much sets the scene for the weekend as things remain unsettled, with gales at times and also some heavy rain.”
