“They Kind Of Evolve Into A Strange Friendship” -‘The Great’ Boss About Catherine, Peter, Gillian Anderson in Season 2.

The scheming Empress Catherine may have staged a coup against her husband Peter, aka the Emperor of Russia, but the dysfunctional duo will have to hold out together now that they’re expecting a child in Season 2.

In the new season, which arrives on Hulu this Friday, the pair navigate a spiky dynamic as married monarchs who also happen to be political enemies at war. and expectant parents. Their incarceration in the same posh palace, while at odds, only makes things more confusing as time goes on.

“They kind of evolve into a strange friendship,” showrunner Tony McNamara told TVLine. “They are a couple, but they have this child together, but she also made him her prisoner, and he seems to have a lot of power for a man who is a prisoner. That just leaves them in a complex dynamic that gets more complicated as the season goes on.”

Meanwhile, Peter can be cruel and impulsive, but from time to time he also shows compassion. How that translates to fatherhood is unclear.

‘He is such a lover for life. He probably thinks he is a great dad and wants to be a great dad. Whether it’s him or not remains to be seen,” McNamara teases. “His heart is, as always, strangely in the right place.”

As Catherine (played by Elle Fanning) ascends the Russian throne, she will discover that overthrowing her husband is nothing compared to “the reality of ‘liberating’ a country that doesn’t want to be,” according to the official synopsis.
