You could say Ariana Grande’s backup dancer turned boyfriend Ricky Alvarez got the short end of the maple bar when it came to her relationship history. This is the man who was involved in #donutgate. For those who blocked it out, that’s when Grande was caught on a donut shop security camera in 2015 licking donuts that she hadn’t purchased, while talking about how she “hates America,” as TMZ reported at the time. Alvarez was also spotted kissing her in the midst of her curious behavior.
Chatting with Billboard, Grande’s close pal Victoria Monet revealed that the “Victorious” star wrote the love song “Moonlight” about Alvarez. “He waited to kiss her for a long time, and she was really impressed,” She said. “He’s such a gentleman, and the song is a great little bookmark of the start of their relationship.”
It was romantic, but the ship eventually went on its way. She did mention him in the first verse of 2018’s “Thank U, Next”: “Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh.” Yes, if it weren’t bad enough Alvarez is the donutgate guy, he also got that line in the song. It’s a good thing he has a sense for humor. After the single dropped, he posted a video on his Instagram Story where he’s listening to the lyric and looking dumbfounded (via Us Weekly). “IM SORRY U GOT THE WORST LINE…IT WAS MEANT V LOVINGLY,” Grande responded in IG, indicating that she and Alvarez are still on friendly terms.
