Watch Dune 2021 Full Movie Free HBO Max, HBO’s streaming service, is the place to find Dune. The Dune movie will be streamed for 31 days starting Friday, October 22, 2021 at 8am BST / 3pm ET / 12pm PT / 5pm AEST.
Dune by Frank Herbert has long been a seminal work in the sci-fi genre. But despite a few attempts to bring its grand saga to the big screen, fans of the novel are still waiting for a satisfying Hollywood adaptation. They will make another attempt soon.
Warner Bros. Studios will release Dune this fall from director Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac and a medley of other A-list actors.
Dune is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and below is everything you need to know about it.
What is the plot of ‘Dune’
Dune is a 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. The story is set on the planet Arrakis, an inhospitable world but one rich in the ‘spice’ known as melange, a much needed resource that can prolong life and raise consciousness.
Arrakis is controlled by the Atreides family. However, when they are betrayed, young Paul Atreides must embark on a journey that can save his family and all of Arrakis.
While there are sequels, this Dune adaptation will only cover Herbert’s first book, and reportedly only half of it.
Who makes up the cast of ‘Dune’?
The level of talent involved with Dune in front of the camera is unbelievable. While Chalamet, Zendaya and Isaac headline the film, Dune is stacked from top to bottom. Here’s a more in-depth look at who’s in Dune and who they’re playing against:
- Timothy Chalamet – Paul Atreides
- Zendaya – Chanic
- Oscar Isaac – Duke Leto Atreides
- Rebecca Ferguson – Lady Jessica
- Jason Momoa – Duncan Idaho
- Josh Brolin – Gurney Halleck
- Dave Bautista – Glossu “Beast” Rabban
- Javier Bardem – Stilgar
- Charlotte Rampling – Gaius Helen Mohiam
- Stellan Skarsgard – Baron Vladimir Harkonnen
- David Dastmalchian – Piter De Vries

When will ‘Dune’ premiere?
Fans have been waiting for Dune for a while. It was originally expected to be released on November 20, 2020, before being initially shifted to December 18, 2020, as all of Hollywood shifted dates due to the pandemic. However, Dune, like many big-budget films in 2020, was shelved until 2021. We now know that Dune will finally make its cinema debut on October 22 (following a premiere at the Venice International Film Festival).
And despite Villeneuve’s criticism of the decision, Dune will indeed appear the same day on HBO Max where the service is available. These day-and-date releases are available at no additional cost to subscribers of the $14.99 HBO Max subscription, but will be available on the streaming service only one month after the film’s release.
Dune has been officially screened at the Venice Film Festival and the first reviews are in, with a mixed bag of reactions.
Many reviewers praise Dune’s greatness, which The Guardian described in a five-star review as “blockbusters at its staggering best”. Though even some who applauded the film’s epic scale apparently found the film a bit of a mess, like The Hollywood Reporter.
Then you have IndieWire, who summed up the entire movie as a “huge disappointment.”
Another common theme in reviews is the feeling that Dune should be seen on the largest screen possible (aka movie theaters), rather than on HBO Max, where it will stream simultaneously for the first 30 days after release. This is an idea that Dune director Dennis Villeneuve has been pushing all along.
Still, the early ratings from review aggregators are strong for Dune. Rotten Tomatoes has the film at 86% hours after the film premiered, while Metacritic rates it at 76.
Will there be a sequel to ‘Dune’?
As mentioned above, Villeneuve created Dune with the aim of it being the first of a two-part story. However, no official green light has yet been given for a sequel. This was actually part of Villeneuve’s concern when he criticized HBO’s Max/Warner Bros. strategy, fearing streaming would hurt Dune’s potential profits and threaten any chance of a sequel. In the end, somehow, we won’t know until a sequel is officially announced.
But it’s not just in the movie where we can see other Dune material. A prequel series titled Dune: The Sisterhood has launched HBO Max, officially pre-ordered for series in 2019. Diane Adamu-John was recently announced as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer for Dune: The Sisterhood. There is no information available on a possible release date.
What about the earlier ‘Dune’ attempts?
Like I said, this isn’t the first time a filmmaker has attempted to adapt Dune for the big screen. Notably, David Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet) brought his unique sensibilities to Dune in 1984. The film starred Kyle MacLachlan and Virginia Madsen, but was widely panned.
Another attempt was made at one point by cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, though he ultimately failed to get his version of Frank Herbert’s novel off the ground. However, there is a great documentary called Jodorowsky’s Dune that details the filmmaker’s plan for its adaptation, including HR Geiger and Salvador Dali.
