Remains found inside alligator confirmed as man killed in Storm Ida floods

Human remains found in an alligator’s stomach have been identified as those of a man who was reported missing three weeks ago.

Timothy Satterlee Sr, 71, was reportedly attacked at his home in the New Orleans suburb of Slidell on August 20 and when it became surrounded by floodwaters.

Authorities said Mr Satterlee’s wife heard a splash and walked outside to see the alligator attacking her husband.

She managed to pull him out to the steps of their home and used a small boat to reach higher ground to get help. However, when she and the deputies returned to the house, Mr Satterlee was gone.

Two weeks after Mr Satterlee was attacked, officials captured a 12-foot, 225kg alligator, which was was euthanised and found to have human remains in its stomach.

The remains were confirmed as his by a coroner in Louisiana on Thursday.

St Tammany parish coroner Dr Charles Preston and his staff were able to make an 11-point DNA match with Mr Satterlee’s children using advanced technology, Sky News reports.

For legal purposes, a 16-point match is a general standard for identifying a body. Further samples have been taken from the family to investigate further.

But for now, the team is satisfied to say the remains belong to the missing pensioner.

Dr Preston said: “In this case, given the circumstances, I am satisfied that an 11-point match confirms these are Mr Satterlee’s remains.

“We offer our sympathies to Mr Satterlee’s family as they continue to deal with this tragic loss.”

The news comes following reports of widespread flooding as Hurricane Ida struck Louisiana in August.

Parts of south Louisiana experienced power cuts and phone services were knocked out.
