In the fall finale, Max and Helen took a plane to London – or at least got into a taxi to the airport. Earlier in Tuesday’s episode, a superbug sent the hospital into crisis mode, causing Max and Helen to postpone their impending departure and intervene to help their colleagues.

In the aftermath, Reynolds observed Max and asked how he could tell Helen he wasn’t going with her. Max said nothing when he looked at Helen. Even after the superbug disaster was resolved, Max still seemed torn, looking between the hospital and where Helen was waiting for him with a taxi.

“Tax me,” Helen said, and Max finally walked over to her. He kissed her before getting into the taxi and sending the driver to the JFK airport.

Helen’s two little words in that last scene are incredibly meaningful to the couple. “Usually they can just read each other’s minds,” explains showrunner David Schulner. “But sometimes, if they were afraid that the other person was holding something back, they would just say, ‘Busy me,’ and the other would confess what they thought. At the time, she was afraid that Max wouldn’t leave with her, but she was wrong.”

It should be noted, however, that Max did not deny Reynolds’ assumption that he would not accompany Helen to London. In fact, he didn’t say anything at all and left the door open for viewers to interpret Max’s intentions.

“It’s so beautiful like Ryan [Eggold] played it too, because when did he make the decision to leave? Was it at that very last moment with Sharpe at the taxi? Or has he always known he was leaving?” Schulner argues. “At that point, he could have protected Reynolds, or he could have protected himself because he didn’t know. It’s so amazing, and only Ryan knows the answer to that. But it’s a beautiful moment. We never told him when he will make that decision or how. I love that it was ambiguous, and I love that people are going to ask themselves, ‘Would he always go away? Or did he make a decision at that last moment?’”

Schulner is also aware that fans may be wondering if Max and Helen are really going to London, as getting into a taxi isn’t exactly the same as getting on a plane. “We couldn’t shoot down a plane,” Schulner says with a laugh. “But I bet even if Max got on the plane, people would speculate, ‘Well, look, we never saw it land.’ I love that people still can’t believe Max is actually leaving. Hopefully that’s a testament to how we set it up and Ryan’s achievements. ”

Indeed, when the series returns on Tuesday, January 4, the couple will have moved into their new home in London, where “Helen is the medical director of the clinic as part of the NHS, and Max expects to fully practice medicine in the UK.” As soon as he gets his driver’s license,” Schulner looks ahead. While the couple will face “big changes” and “big challenges” in this new chapter of their relationship, “they followed each other, followed their joy, and that will reward them,” added Schulner. “Many of our characters are punished in the finale for some of the more questionable choices they made, but Max and Sharpe follow their joy, and sadly this has taken them away from New Amsterdam.”

Elsewhere in the fall finale, Reynolds got quite a surprise when Lyn told him their situation would get even more complicated because she’s pregnant! Further complicating matters is the fact that the paternity of the baby is not so clear. “Floyd is interested and Baptiste is interested in who is the father of this child,” reveals star Jocko Sims in the video interview above. “We get really caught up in that, so much so that we kind of forget about Lyn and what she’s going through. It’s a teaching moment for Floyd and Baptiste that we see coming. That way you get to see more of Baptiste, even though he is currently fired.”

While Reynolds may seem like the type of guy who yearns to start a family, “I’d definitely say this isn’t what he wanted, but I think this will get Reynolds thinking,” Sims says. “I read an episode this morning that had a very poignant moment with just Reynolds alone, and I can’t wait to film it. He is currently thinking about fatherhood and the possible ups and downs that can come with it. Whether this child is his or not, it changes him a little bit for now.”
