Robert Silverberg remembers precisely the genesis of his story “Needle in a Timestack.” He was chatting with another author at a science fiction convention when a young fan interrupted their conversation.
“Go away, boy, or I’ll change your future,” the other author growled.
To which Silverberg replied, “No, tell him you’ll change his past.” And just like that, Silverberg realized, he’d given himself a great story idea.
John Ridley, the Oscar-winning author of Twelve Years A Slave, clearly agreed. He wrote and directed the film version of the story, starring Leslie Odom Jr., Freida Pinto, Cynthia Erivo, Orlando Bloom, and Jadyn Wong, with a release scheduled for October 15, 2021, through Lionsgate.

‘Needle in a Timestack’ review: put a pin in it
Who among us has never dreamed of turning back time and changing a decision or event, just like Cher and the Terminator? Unfortunately, that possibility is a reality in John Ridley’s slow, dull slick time travel novel, “Needle in a Timestack.”
Nick (Leslie Odom Jr.) is a chic architect, and his wife, Janine (Cynthia Erivo), is a chic photographer. We know they are soul mates because they talk about their great love all the time, perhaps to make up for the fact that they don’t have real personalities.
One day, Nick realizes that a so-called time shift has taken place – a slight reshuffling of reality after someone travels back in time to change the past – changing the present. Furthermore, more significant changes to the timeline continue to occur until we land in a reality where Janine is married to Tommy (Orlando Bloom), their old friend. Nick realizes that Tommy has been messing with the past to get the woman he wanted finally.
The fascinating idea in “Needle in a Timestack” is that “time chasing” is to some extent an everyday activity: it’s so expensive that only rich people like Tommy can afford it regularly. But Ridley (the writer of “12 Years a Slave”) decides to cling to the glossy surfaces of ambitious lives, continuing to apply sayings such as “Love is drawn in the shape of a circle” and “Have we thought about the cause? and effect of our choices?” That Needle was used to sew slogans onto pillows.
