Mindhunter in Netflix is an acclaimed serial killer and thriller drama that follows the behavioral science unit’s development and their encounters with serial killers. The second season of Mindhunter wrapped up back in 2019. The series packs a potent dose of effectiveness and skepticism that the department showcases.
The series is entirely based on the acclaimed book, Mindhunter: India, the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. Moreover, the book was written by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas. The book shares perspective on the most pressurized journeys right inside the prison as Holden Ford and Bill Tench played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany. The agents are in charge of interviewing the serial killers apprehended and imprisoned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The series is produced by the acclaimed director, David Fincher, who has made masterpiece films like Gone Girl and Fight Club, and Joe Penhall, who brought The Road to life. Initially, Netflix, the streaming giant, picked up to distribute the series for a couple of seasons. For quite some time, David Fincher has been trying to get the series up for a third-season renewal, but the production budget and COVID-19 have come into the way of renewal.
Will Mindhunter Have a Third Season?
The second season of Mindhunter did attain critical acclaim after it aired back in Summer 2019. However, the producer revealed that Netflix had put the series in an indefinite hole in the following year. It is currently unclear if the series will be back for the third season, and also, it will be back then when would Netflix release Mindhunter.
As the show is not canceled, there is a chance that it would be back, but production cost should be met to release Mindhunter. David Fincher, the executive producer, also mentioned that his hands are tied with many other projects at the time. On the other hand, Holt McCallany, Jonathan Groff, and Anna Torc have reportedly been released from the contracts.

One of Netflix’s spokesperson revealed that Mindhunter might return in the foreseeable future, but it is unfair to the actor to be held back from seeking other work in the meantime.
Mindhunter Season 3: Release Date
Even if the series has been put on indefinite hold, the only thing that can be speculated as to when the third season would hit Netflix. Currently, Fincher is busy with season 2 of Death + Robots, Mank which will release on Netflix on the 4th of December 2021. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented countless movies and shows from kickstarting production.

Considering that Mindhunter isn’t canceled, the third season is much likely to arrive sometime in the first half of 2022. There was a two-year gap between the first and the second season that premiered in October 2017 & August 2019. It seems like fans have to wait a bit longer than the original expected timeline.
Mindhunter Season 3: Cast
The cast and crew of the first two seasons will be back for the third season as they are the central characters. The series features prominent actors like Holt McCallany, Jonathan Groff, Anna Torv, Cotter Smith, Hannah Gross, Stacey Roca among others.
