This week on NBC’s La Brea, we learned about another sinkhole and the war that followed in 10,000 BC, and it all led to perhaps the show’s most revealing yet!
IN THE COUNTRY BELOW BELOW….
As they recover from the sudden winter storm, the survivors finally realize they must start planning for long-term survival, and no mini-greenhouse made of car windows will make it. Just then, Lily cries from the forest, and Eve, Levi, and others begin to hunt what turns out to be Isaiah, the little blond boy from the fortress. The backpack rat’s escape is cut short when he grabs a backhoe and cuts open the inside of his right wrist, which Sam quickly tapes up. Eve, Levi and Ty then decide to drive the boy back to the fortress and then contact his community for ProTips for jungle survival.
The reception they get is initially controversial, until Paara shows up and gets on well with (her total crush) Ty and his friends. She shows them how to maintain a robust garden and, when pressed, explains how ‘sky people’ at one point became the enemy of lord people. Sixty years ago, she says, a sinkhole formed in the ocean and a passenger ship “fell” through it. The survivors chose not to make peace with the local population, but to go to war. After years of conflict, those left behind found common ground and agreed to live in peace with each other and share cultures and languages.
After a shared lunch, Isaiah offers to show Eve the nearby lake, where he explains that his parents died, he was young(er), and that he and his grandfather only arrived a few years ago. That shatters Eve’s assumption that the elder has arrived on the passenger ship, but Isaiah says he is “not allowed” to discuss the matter.
While Eve is with Isaiah, Levi does some snooping and finds evidence that seemingly proves “Grandpa” killed Eddie – the deceased’s wallet. Grandpa, when confronted for Eve and Paara, insists Eddie was dead when he found him, and he took the wallet to get information about the newcomers. Whatever the case, Paara declares that the burgeoning trust between the groups has been broken and sends Ty & Co. on the road.
But just then, the village learns that a strange woman has taken Isaiah! Paara agrees to let Ty and the others join the hunt, but it’s Grandpa who catches up with Isaiah and his captor first – Rebecca Aldridge! And grandpa knows her! “You know how important he is,” Rebecca says of the boy, but Grandpa doesn’t flinch. He pulls out a knife and a skirmish takes place off-screen, leaving Rebecca stabbed and bleeding.
Despite Paara’s best efforts, Rebecca’s wounds are serious, and with what may be her dying breath, she silently informs Eve that Isaiah is “special, there is something he must do…. What matters is that you find Isaiah.” When Eve asks why her, Rebecca realizes, “You have no idea who he is, do you?”
Elsewhere, we learned that Sam has had PTS since serving in Afghanistan and has been on anti-anxiety drugs for years as a result — and he only has one tablet left in h– oops, he dropped it in a grate! So he has no. As such, when Veronica was discovered lurking in the camp, he demanded Marybeth’s handcuffs and tied Lily’s sister to the wheel of a random car. When Veronica had a panic attack and stopped breathing, Sam cooled down and saved her life — after which he told Riley about his PTS and medications. Also, Riley and Josh shared another kiss while on patrol – and amazingly, their temporary indiscretion didn’t come back to bite them/turn them into a saber-toothed tiger’s lunch.
Gavin very, all tried badly to hide from Izzy that he is still conspiring with Sophia on how to save Eva, Josh et al. Later in school, Izzy met Andrew Velez – as in Riley’s brother – and he invited Izzy to a vigil for those who lost people in the sinkhole.
Gavin and Sophia returned to the art gallery run by Ella, the woman who had been with Gavin as a young girl when he was found on the street. Ella was MIA, but her co-worker said the handprint sculpture was something Ella delved into six days ago. When they went out, Gavin and Sophia saw Ella move away, so Sophia let her peeps run across the plates. When Gavin heard that Izzy course, he found his daughter on a beach that looks like no beach in Los Angeles, and he “realized that he’s pursuing alternative courses of action. They then both attended the wake/met Andrew, until Sophia called with an address for Ella – in Topanga Canyon, near where she and Gavin had been found in 1988.
Arriving at the property, Gavin and Sophia found what appeared to be a one-time sinkhole in the backyard. As Gavin approaches it, he has a vision – not a third person POV as usual, but from Isaiah’s eyes, as the tyke spoke to his grandfather. So Gavin realizes that out of those 10,000 B.C. world, just as Eve learns in conversation with Rebecca that Isaiah is a little Gavin!
