Kate Garraway gives emotional update on husband Derek as she pays tribute to nurses

Kate Garraway has offered an emotional update on her husband Derek Draper’s condition at The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Awards.

Kate Garraway (54), took to the stage to present The Sun’s Best Nurse award. She thanked all of the healthcare heroes with her moving speech.

Davina McCollum, the host of the Channel 4 Awards ceremony, inquired about Derek. Derek has been suffering from the effects Covid-19 since March 2013 and was admitted to hospital for a long time.

Davina asked: “Kate, I would love to ask on behalf of all of us – how is Derek doing?”

A clearly emotional Kate replied: “He’s had a good day today. Before I got out, we did some exercises.

“A day at a time, but today’s a good day. Thank you for asking, that’s really kind of you,” she added to Davina.

Kate then delved into a moving tribute to the nurses who have gone above and beyond during the coronavirus pandemic, as she began: “I’m here to talk about nurses.

“I mean, where do you begin, there is absolutely no doubt that everything nurses do every day is utterly breath-taking.

“But sometimes it’s the little moments of thoughtfulness that make all the difference and it’s one of those that’s lead to tonight’s recipient being nominated.”

Among those presenting emotional tributes to NHS and other healthcare staff was music mogul Simon Cowell, who said in a video filmed for the awards ceremony: “Every one of us would love to thank the health care heroes in the world today. After what they’ve gone through in the last 24 months, thank you is an understatement.”

England football manager Gareth Southgate added: “On behalf of the England team I just want to say thank you to all our health care heroes. It’s amazing it took a pandemic for us to realise exactly what you do, but I think we knew it anyway really.”

While comedian Mo Gilligan commented: “Thank you so much for all the hard work you have done for the past 18 months and you continue to do. Without you, a lot of the stuff would not be possible, so big up yourself 10 times, 20 times, 50,000 times.”
