Jimmy Greaves: Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville lead tributes as fans pay respect

Tributes are flooding in for former Tottenham and England great Jimmy Greaves who has passed away at the age of 81.

After suffering a stroke last year, which left him paralysed and severely impaired in speech, the Spurs legend had been suffering from illness for some time.

Tottenham claimed that he died at home on Sunday morning.

In a statement, the club said: “We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of the great Jimmy Greaves, not just Tottenham Hotspur’s record goalscorer but the finest marksman this country has ever seen.

“Jimmy passed away at home in the early hours of this morning (Sunday 19 September), aged 81.”

Greaves was – and remains – the greatest goalscorer in English top-flight history, with 357 goals in 516 matches, well over 70 clear of Newcastle United hero Alan Shearer in second on 283.

He was adored not just for his incredible goalscoring feats, but for TV work too, becoming one of half of one of TV’s most popular double-acts on the iconic Saint & Greavsie.

Following his tragic passing, tributes have been flooding in for the former Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham striker.
