When How I Met Your Mother first aired on CBS back in 2005, it would go on to enjoy an era of almost a decade.
The sitcom was inspired by the real-life friendship between show creators Craig Thomas & Carter Bays. It centered on Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), who sought love with his Manhattan friends.
Future Ted narrates the story of his mother’s birth to his children.
The American sitcom was a hit and lasted nine seasons, with 208 episodes. It also won many awards while it was on small-screen.
The quirky comedy series was nominated for 30 Emmy Awards and won ten of them.
The People’s Choice Award was given to the show for Best Network TV Comedy. This award was presented seven years after it premiered.
Star caught up on the lives of cast members to commemorate 16 years since the premiere of the show on September 19, 2005.
Josh Radnor – Ted Mosby
Hopeless romantic Ted was the show’s leading man, who strives to find his dream lady who eventually becomes the mother of his children.
Ted actor Josh Radnor starred in several films and TV shows after he left How I Met Your Mother. However, he also turned his talents to writing and directed.
He starred in Mercy Street, a Civil War period drama, in 2016, and then he was cast in Rise (2018) and Hunters. Hunters premiered last year.
He starred with fashion icon Elisabeth Olson in the 2012 romance film Liberal Arts, which was set at a university. This film he also directed and authored.
Josh is a musical maestro too, and in 2016 he announced he was in a band called Radnor and Lee with an Australian musician called Ben Lee.
Rolling Stone magazine praised their 2017 debut album. It turned out that the pair met on HIMYM’s set.
Josh revealed that meditation helped him overcome a broken up and his descent into depression.
He said in an interview: “When actors ask me for my one piece of advice, I always tell them to meditate. The thing that will take you down, personally and professionally, is your mind.”
“If you grieve, you grieve hard, and it moves through you. There’s a fluidity to feelings and thoughts and you don’t get hooked.”
Jason Segel – Marshall Eriksen
Jason played Ted’s loyal friend Marshall, who gets married to Lily (Alyson Hannigan).
Although Jason is best known for his role as Marshall, Judd Apatow’s one-season sitcom Freaks and Geeks was his first major break. He starred alongside Seth Rogan and James Franco.
He was a star, writer, and producer in several comedy films, including Sex Tape (2014). This film was produced by Cameron Diaz, his Hollywood girlfriend.
Last year, he created the drama series, Dispatches from Elsewhere – working as a writer, director and executive producer on the project.
Segel is an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church. In fact, he performed a live ceremony for a wedding on The Tonight Show, July 2010.
Segel had noticed the couple and took photos of Jason all around his hometown, as well as at his favorite bar.
Jason dated Brokeback Mountain actress Michelle Williams for a year between 2012 to 2013
Cobie Smulders – Robin Scherbatsky
Cobie played reporter Robin Scherbatsky, Ted’s love interest and close pal.
Cobie enjoyed great success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after finishing with Robin on HIMYM.
She was Agent Maria Hill in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Avengers: Endgame (2019). Spider-Man: Far From Home (2018).
This means that she has starred alongside A-listers such as Robert Downey Jr. Chris Hemsworth or Tom Holland.
Cobie also appeared alongside Mission Impossible actor Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher – Never Go Back (2016).
Tragically, Smulders revealed that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007 – which meant she was still shooting season 3 of HIMYM at the age of 25.
Cobie had to have surgery to remove the tumours in her ovaries. Unfortunately, the cancer spread to her lymph nodes and she needed several operations.
In 2019, Smulders declared that she was now in remission.
In 2012, she married Taran Killam, a US comedian. The couple got engaged in January 2009.
Killam appeared in a few episodes of HIMYM. This meant that the couple could work together on set, despite not being lovers.
They share two daughters, who were born in 2009 and 2015.
Neil Patrick Harris – Barney Stinson
Neil was nominated for four Emmy Awards for his role as the womanising Barney Stinson in HIMYM.
He’s had great success on stage and screen and was invited to host 2015’s 87th Oscars – making him the first openly homosexual host of the Academy Awards.
He hosted the Tony Awards, Emmys and Tony Awards in 2009 and 2013, and three times in 2013.
His films include Gone Girl, a murder thriller, and Seth Macfarlane’s A Million Ways to Die In the West (2014).

Neil came out as gay in public in November 2006, saying: “I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.”
He is married to actor David Burka, who starred with Neil in HIMYM – another co-star romance story for the sitcom’s history books.
Actually, Pamela Fryman (the director of HIMYM) officiated at the wedding while Elton John performed at reception.
After using a surrogate mother, they now have twins Gildeon (and Harper)
Alyson Hannigan – Lily Aldrin
Buffy the Vampire star Alyson was already famous before playing Marshall’s wife, Lily Aldrin on the sitcom.
Her role as Lily in American Pie is also well-known. In 2009, she was awarded a People’s Choice Award for her Lily role.
Since 2016, she has been hosting the magic competition show, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and providing her vocal talents for the voice of Claire Clancy in the Disney Junior animated series, Fancy Nancy.
Alyson tied the knot with her Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel co-star Alexis Denisof in California on 11 October, 2003.
Their wedding took place at Two Bunch Palms Resort, Desert Hot Springs, California.
They now reside in Los Angeles, with their two daughters, Satyana & Keeva.
Cristin Milioti – Tracy McConnell
Although Cristin only starred in the last season of How I Met Your Mother from 2013 to 2014, she had the titular role as Ted’s wife Tracy, ‘the mother’.
She starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), the same year she appeared on the sitcom.
But she has had a lot of success after HIMYM. In 2015, she appeared on black comedy show Fargo and in Palm Springs in 2020. This was where Andy Samberg, Brooklyn 99’s star, worked.
