India and its countrymen are all set to celebrate the 71st Republic Day on the 26th of January 2020. Republic Day is celebrated across the country since 1950, three years after independence as it marks an important landmark in Indian history.
A brief history of Republic Day
India gained its freedom Britishers on the 15th of August 1947, to make this occasion remarkable, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his most popular speech namely, ‘Tryst with Destiny,’ and declared that India is free from British rule. Nevertheless, the inescapable truth is that India didn’t become a democratic country right after it gained independence; hence the country wasn’t a democratic country at first.
Beforehand, the country used to follow the laws which were embedded deep inside the Government of India Act of 1935. After Independence, leaders across the country realized the need to come up with a constitute, hence a drafting committee came into being where Dr. Bheem Rao Ambedkar was appointed as the chairman.
On the 26th of January 1950, the constitution of India came into being on the occasion of Republic day. Furthermore, this ended King George VI’s constitutional monarchy which the country used to follow even after gaining independence. Once the constitution of India came into being, the world witnessed the inception of the greatest democratic country in the entire world.
On this historical day, India became socialist, sovereign, democratic, secular, and republic. For honoring the auspicious day, the entire country celebrates Republic Day with utmost ardor all through the country. It took two years, 11 months & 18 days to bring the Indian Constitution to life.
