Graeme Souness explains big Arsenal “worry” despite Tottenham derby win

Graeme Souness has expressed his concern for Mikel Arteta’s position due to the youthful nature of the Arsenal squad at his disposal.

The north London club opted to look to the future with their summer recruitment – all six of their additions were aged either 23 years old or younger.

As well as that, Arteta has established academy graduates Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, who are aged 21 and 20 respectively, as first team starters.

All in all, that makes for a very young squad, which although is promising for years to come, is not what they need at present according to Souness.

Graeme Souness is not convinced Arsenal’s squad should be so young when they aren’t in a solid position

Speaking to Sky Sports before the derby with Tottenham, he said: “Arsenal are a big worry for me, they’re buying young players, you introduce young players into the team it’s organised, it’s winning, it’s playing with a bit of confidence.

“Tony [Adams] alluded to it, they’re bringing young guys in and wanting them to be main men, that’s never good.

“It concerns me, was there plan at the start of the season the way we can take this club forward is buy young players and they might be players in two, three years.

“This club won’t stand for that, the manager won’t stay here for a two-year wait.

“Time is not your friend when you’re a manager and both of these managers find themselves under pressure, five games in.

“These are big football clubs, these two teams should be at the higher end of the Premier League they shouldn’t be where they are, down near the bottom.”

The Gunners lined-up for the clash with their rivals with a starting XI which had an average age of roughly 24 years and 2 months.

Midfielders Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were the only players to be aged older than 24.

Naturally, Arteta needs time to work with his squad, but as Souness has warned, he may need more immediate success to save his job.
