‘Distraught’ man jumps jumped from building – kills himself and man he fell on

A community in New York is in shock after a man said to be suffering a mental health crisis jumped from a 12-storey building – and landed on another man who happened to be walking below, killing him.

The incident occurred at Cromwell Towers in Yonkers, Westchester County.

The 25-year-old man leaped from the building’s roof and landed on a 61-year-old man who had been walking through the courtyard below.

“I just seen them on the floor, they was lying there before the police came,” ABC7 News received a report from a stunned witness.

“The male was in mental crisis, he had been cutting himself, we found blood throughout the building where he had been cutting himself, and being in an emotional crisis like that he went up to the roof and jumped,” Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller told reporters.

The identity of both men is being with withheld, but the 61-year-old man who died is understood not to have actually been a resident at the building.

“He was a friend of a friend,” one witness explained. “He came here to visit him and made his way back home, as he walked out the building … spontaneously, someone falls from the sky, you know and everyone is confused like what’s going on.

“We thought it was a car crash but looked back and see the two people on the ground not moving.”

Locals have created a small memorial in the courtyard, and some residents have complained that it’s too easy for anyone to get access to the roof.

No comment has as yet been made by the building’s management.

Investigators say there is no evidence of foul play, and have reminded New Yorkers that there is a wide range of mental health services support available.

“It’s good to let people know that there are resources and there are things that we can get out and get ahead of this through prevention,” Commissioner Mueller said.
