David Moyes defends decision to bring Mark Noble on for penalty in Man Utd loss

David Moyes has defended his call to bring on Mark Noble late on to take a penalty in West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United despite it being saved.

The saved strike ensured Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men earned all three points at the London Stadium – with the Hammers left rueing their missed opportunity to snatch a point.

Said Benrahma scored the opening goal for the home team in the first half, before Cristiano Ronaldo made it 2-0 five minutes later.

Jesse Lingard then doubled the Red Devils’ goal tally late on. But, Luke Shaw was found to have handballed in the box, and a penalty was given.

Moyes made the decision to bring the club’s longest-serving player on to take the kick despite having not kicked a ball beforehand, and his subsequent penalty was saved by David De Gea.

Moyes supported the decision of Noble to take the penalty kick, despite his missed shot.

David Moyes said he has no regrets over the decision to bring on Noble

Moyes told BBC Sport: “We got a penalty kick and I have one of the best penalty takers in the Premier League and Europe. I think if I hadn’t made the decision I’d have been more annoyed with myself.

“I asked him and he said I’m ready, he has a great record, why would we not? We have missed some games recently, so I thought I would bring Mark on.

“I think are all enjoying the game more because of how the referees are going about their jobs, I thought the referee did a great job today.”

The Irons boss then doubled down on the call, saying Noble’s ‘record’ proved him to be more than capable of burying the ball past De Gea.

“Look at his record, his record’s very good. I think I would’ve been more disappointed if I hadn’t made the decision than if I did, it just didn’t quite work today.”

Martin Atkinson made several calls for Man United penalties throughout the game before finally deciding to give the penalty to the home side in the final minutes of the game.

Moyes was asked about the decisions and he said he had no complaints of Atkinson’s overall performance.

“I thought the referee refereed the game really well today. It’s great that we’re seeing the performances of the referee, letting the game go and I think it’s helping everyone who watches football.”

Moyes also spoke about his former club’s title chances this season.

“I think you’ve got to look at what Manchester United have done in probably getting their position talked about being possible champions. I think we’ve given them a run for their money, we want to try and do that with top teams.

“The more times we play at this level the better we’ll become as well, hopefully we’ll improve again.”

The result sees Solskjær’s men remain level at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference. West Ham is eighth with eight points.
