The series released on 14th April 2021, had high expectations from critics and audience alike, thanks in part to the star-billing attached to its name. But ratings of 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.1 on IMDb seem to suggest that the show has more than missed its mark.

Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! Plot

A clueless middle-aged father, a volatile teenager daughter, with a family business, teenage boys, and tik-tok all thrown in the mix, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me, attempts to portray the funny side of a dysfunctional father-daughter duo on the mend.

It follows the eccentricities of the Dixon Family, focusing mainly on the dad, Brian Dixon (Jamie Foxx), who heads the slowly dying cosmetic company which was previously his mother’s and his daughter Sasha (Kyla-Drew), a typical 15-year-old teenager who recently lost her mother, currently forced to adjust to the life in Atlanta while dealing with her dad’s cringe prone and embarrassing (as the title of the series is aptly named) idiosyncrasies. David Alan Grier as the unhinged, often high, rowdy Pops Dixon (Brian’s father), Porscha Coleman as the sometimes outright hilarious Chelsea Dixon (Brian’s sister) and Jonathan Kite as the bumbling Johnny Williams (Brian’s best friend and an Atlanta police officer) complete the ensemble.

Although the ratings as mentioned have been abysmally low, having Jamie Foxx’s name attached to the project, no doubt, has drawn in millions of viewers, especially in the U.S, and propelled the show on to the No. 1 position on the Top 10 list of TV shows, on Netflix in multiple regions. A feat no less impressive considering that it has only been a few days since its release.

Netflix, which historically has given more weightage to viewership than to critic’s ratings, understandably makes it likely that the series will be renewed for Season 2. But since it has been very recently released, no official news has been sent out regarding the renewal.

A show of 8 episodes seems like an unusually low number for a sitcom. If more episodes have been shot and held back for some reason, we might expect a release as early as the end of this year. If not, it’s safe to assume, in the present climate, a new release might not see the light of the day till 2022.
