Chelsea reportedly offered Andreas Christensen a pay reduction in their first offer to the defender for a new contract.
The Sun report that the opening offer in contract renewal negotiations was lower than the £78,000 a week wages he currently receives at the club.
After the club offered to sell the Danish central defender back on January 2020, the club did not make any offer. However, he had previously enjoyed a string of good form and has become a key player for the club.
However, he has now reportedly finalised talks over a new £120,000-per-week deal with the finer details being worked out before an official announcement is made.
Christensen’s current deal expires at the end of this season but after playing four of the club’s opening five league matches, Chelsea were keen to tie him down long term.
The 25-year old also played in the UEFA Super Cup as well as Chelsea’s Champions League opener against Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Thomas Tuchel, Tuchel’s manager, was very pleased with his performance this season.
“Andreas has been very strong since day one, can play in all three positions in the defence and he plays with a lot of confidence,” After the match, he stated.

“In the beginning, I had the feeling it was a bit of [a] push to believe in himself and impose himself and trust in his quality because he has everything that we need in these positions.
“Again a very strong performance. It is evident in the following minutes.
“We rely fully on him and he’s doing very, very good so far and it is everybody’s target that he continues like this.”
Christensen, who was just 16 when he arrived from Brondby, joined Chelsea in 2012. He was promoted to the first team three year later.
Christensen has played 133 games for the Blues since then, winning the Champions League. He also won the FA Cup and the Europa League.
