Bernd Leno ‘eyes exit’ after Mikel Arteta gave “no clear reason” over Arsenal decision

Bernd Leno has suggested he is ‘eyeing an exit’ from Arsenal after revealing that Mikel Arteta has given him “no clear reason” for dropping him in recent matches.

The Germany international was a part of Arsenal’s first three league matches. They lost all three, conceding nine goals, and were relegated to the bottom of Premier League.

After Leno’s international move to Sheffield United, Arteta became the manager and replaced him with Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners won all of their matches, Ramsdale kept two clean sheets, and Leno played only once in the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Leno explained how the change in goalkeeper’s came as a shock as he explained: “There was no clear reason why I was out, but it had nothing to do with my performance.

“He is the trainer, he decides. It is difficult for me.”

The former Bayer Leverkusen stopper, who joined the Gunners for £22.5million in 2018, has been linked with a move to Inter Milan in recent days.

“London is very nice; Milan is not bad either and closer to my home Stuttgart,” he admits.

“I’m not seriously thinking about that yet. I feel comfortable at Arsenal and in London.

“Only if nothing changes in my situation by winter would I have to think about things: what option do I have, how can I continue? I am currently focusing on my training and can’t think of anything else.”

Although he has been linked with Inter, their interest is not concrete and they have instead reportedly agreed a deal to sign Arsenal target Andre Onana on a free transfer from Ajax next summer.

Since arriving at the Emirates Stadium three years ago, Leno has made 121 appearances for the club having immediately become first choice.

However, with over a year still remaining on his contract he appears to now be playing second fiddle to Ramsdale, as shown by his selection for the Carabao Cup win against League One side AFC Wimbledon last week.
